The ranking covered an earlier operating year
The Edge reported on 28 August 2026 that Port Klang retained tenth place in the World Top Container Ports 2026 ranking after handling approximately 15.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2025. A twenty-foot equivalent unit, usually shortened to TEU, is a standard measure of container volume. The team covered the ranking on 30 August.
Keep those dates separate: the ranking was reported in 2026, while the throughput related to 2025. Northport's own January 2026 release also recorded its component terminal's 2025 performance. Neither an annual ranking nor a terminal record establishes the current journey time from a particular factory.
A port connection is only part of the route
For a Shah Alam manufacturer or distributor, the relevant question is how goods travel between the operating premises and the terminal used by the business. A location described as near Port Klang still needs to be checked against the actual collection point, destination terminal and vehicles involved.
Begin with the logistics team's own movements. Identify the routes it expects to use, the delivery windows it needs to meet and the access requirements at each end. A broad location description can start the shortlist, but the operating team should test whether the proposed premises fits the work it needs to carry out.
Check the final approach to the factory
A building can appear well connected on a regional map while leaving unanswered questions at the estate entrance or loading area. Before committing, ask the relevant parties to confirm the intended vehicle access, turning arrangements, loading facilities and any operating restrictions. Site-specific requirements may need review by the transport operator or a qualified adviser.
Use the same assumptions when comparing two properties. For example, compare the route to the same terminal for the same business movement. Record the time of the assessment and any conditions that need a further check. That makes the comparison easier to explain than a general claim that one address is strategically located.
Compare the whole occupancy decision
Logistics should sit alongside the other requirements of the premises search. Ask how a location fits the business's loading needs, storage layout, staffing arrangements and required occupation date. A property that fits one transport movement may leave another important requirement unresolved.
A useful comparison records known costs, outstanding quotations and assumptions separately. It should be clear which figures came from the transport provider, which depend on the proposed building and which still need confirmation. The port ranking cannot supply a freight rate, a delivery commitment or a total operating budget for the business.
What the headline does not show
The reported ranking is regional logistics context. It does not demonstrate a change in Shah Alam industrial rents, values or occupier demand, and it cannot establish the suitability of an individual factory. For a premises search, use it as a reason to ask better route questions. The Shah Alam Factory & Land Team can help organise a property shortlist around those practical requirements.
